With few options left for people to protect themselves from the ever growing police state, many activists are beginning to raise awareness about jury nullification, in hopes of hopes of keeping nonviolent people who get charged with crimes out of jail.
For those who don’t know, jury nullification is basically the right for any juror to not only judge the facts of the case, but to also actually judge the validity of the law itself. This means that if a jury feels that a defendant is facing an unjust charge, they actually have the right to rule in the defendant’s favor, even if they are technically guilty under the court’s standards.
The federal government, and individual state governments are terrified about this concept becoming more mainstream.
To help raise awareness about Jury Nullification, activist James Babb has started a campaign to install billboards all across the country, which will inform jurors of their right to judge the validity of the law. The first billboards have already been installed in Washington DC, and Phoenix Arizona, and fundraising efforts are currently underway to place additional billboards in other major cities across the US.
On October 10th, the ad campaign began in Washington, DC with two billboards at the Archives station. The headline of these ads read “Jury Duty? Know your rights!” and “Google: Jury Nullification.”
“If you are selected for jury duty, the normal instinct is to find a way out of it. That is completely understandable, especially if you don’t understand the incredible opportunity of the juror to stop wrongful imprisonment and government tyranny,” project facilitator James Babb said.
“Every juror has the power to say “not guilty” if they disagree with the law. Every juror has the power to judge the facts of the case, the law itself, and whether or not the law is being misapplied. This is the power of jury nullification, a centuries-old tradition that goes back to the Magna Carta. A single juror with a conscience can send a peaceful man home to his family instead of to a cage.” He added.
The majority of the funds were crowd-sourced using social media, and the fundraising campaign for the next few billboards is already halfway towards its goal. Additionally, Babb is asking people to get involved in the project by helping him set up billboards in their area. He said that he is looking for people to scout out good locations for billboards in their local areas, and contact him about how to set them up.
“Many of us were inspired by former Penn State professor, Dr. Julien Heicklen who has traveled the country to pamphlet near courthouses, informing potential jurors of their right to nullify bad laws. We want to build on his his work” said Babb.
Babb added that, “In addition to destroying the lives of peaceful people, this culture of incarceration has created an unbearable tax burden. As the “justice system” becomes more corrupt, the role of the juror becomes more important than ever.”
The ad campaign has already made waves. According to the Washington Post, “prosecutors have been scrambling to ensure that the billboard’s message doesn’t influence their cases.” An informed jury is clearly a threat to the establishment.
