Cop in Charge of Rape Victim’s Case, Accused of Stalking and Sexually Harrassing the Victim

“[The victim] felt sickened and disgusted by Fields’ texts, comments and stalking behavior, but because he was the lead investigator on her case, she was afraid to make him angry for fear he would not use his best efforts to put her perpetrator behind bars,”

karl fieldsKarl Fields, a police officer from Chattanooga, Tennessee has been accused of sexually harassing and stalking a rape victim that he claimed to be helping with a criminal case.

Fields reportedly stalked the woman, parking out in front of her house on numerous occasions, and contacting her on a frequent basis.

According to a lawsuit recently filed by the victim, Fields attempted to call her 73 times in one night, and would frequently text her, requesting nude photographs and making obscene demands.

The victim did not know how to handle the officer’s advances, because he was supposed to be in charge of investigating her case.

“[The victim] felt sickened and disgusted by Fields’ texts, comments and stalking behavior, but because he was the lead investigator on her case, she was afraid to make him angry for fear he would not use his best efforts to put her perpetrator behind bars,” Stuart James, the woman’s attorney wrote in the lawsuit.

One night, Fields invited the woman to a restaurant, saying that he had some new information about her case, and wanted to speak with her in person.

When she arrived at the restaurant, Fields was not interested in her case, but instead told her that he had feelings for her.  At some point during the eventing, Fields followed the woman to the restroom area and pulled her into the men’s room, where he pinned her up against a wall and kissed her, forcing himself onto her.

Just a month prior, the woman had been raped in a bathroom, under similar circumstances. Fields repeated this traumatic situation, knowing the details of the woman’s past experience.  After running out of the restaurant, the woman said she wanted to go home, so officer Fields drove her back to her house after having several drinks.

Once back at her house, Fields demanded to use the bathroom inside, and then attempted to force himself on her again.  Finally, after an argument Fields left the house, and the victim began compiling evidence of sexual harassment.

Last month, Fields was placed on paid administrative leave, after the victim’s lawyer gave Hamilton County District Attorney General Neal Pinkston copies of the text messages that were allegedly exchanged between her and Fields.

Both criminal and civil charges have been filed against Fields, and civil charges have been filed against the police department and the city as well.
