According to a recent lawsuit filed by a man in New Mexico, the DEA forced him to snitch on local black market participants and then compensated him in crack.

The man was actually a recovering crack addict, which is why he got caught up with police in the first place.  Unfortunately, the payment that he received ended up triggering a relapse, bringing 38-year-old Aaron Romero back into the addiction that he was trying to escape from.

Romero was approached by DEA agents in 2011 and began working for them under duress in a program called “Operation Smack City”, which was intended to infiltrate a drug business that made shipments between the cities of Las Vegas and Albuquerque.

He was targeted because he was a known drug addict. He is trying to get his life back together but he’s still afraid that the government will try to restart his addiction again,” his attorney Erlinda Ocampo Johnson told reporters.

It would be interesting to know what level of involvement that the Albuquerque police department had in this ordeal.  As we have been covering extensively over this past year, the Albuquerque police department has become known as one of the worst in the country.

According to a local news channel, the lawsuit seeks $8.5 million in damages for the loss of “love, familial relationships, and companionship” related to Romero’s ongoing crack addiction.

The lawsuit, which names five DEA agents also states that: “The United States government and the defendants affirmatively and intentionally established a pattern of distribution of crack cocaine to (Romero) in order to utilize his addiction to crack cocaine to further the investigation and to ‘stack drug related charges’ against him.”

According to his lawyer Ramero is currently clean and sober.
