Bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea, known for his activism, has become a professional beekeeper in the midst of waning bee populations. With bee populations having fallen by 40%-60% since April of last year, humanity treads on dangerous ground.

With Colony Collapse Disorder decimating bee populations over the past few decades, the possible collapse of the food chain, which critically depend on bees to pollinate plant life, has become a potentially grave reality that humanity must face.

Amidst the worst bee die-off in the past decade, Flea turned his backyard into a home for three hives of over 60,000 bees each, with a total of over 200,000 of the winged insects housed in his apiary.

Morgan Freeman also recently made headlines when it was learned that he was turning his 124-acre Mississippi estate in to a haven for bees, which is home to 26 hives.

“There’s a concerted effort to bring bees back onto the planet. We do not realize that they are the foundation, I think, of the growth of the planet, the vegetation. I have so many flowering things, and I have a gardener too. Because she takes care of the bees too, all she does is figure out, ‘OK, what would they like to have?’, so we’ve got acres and acres of clover, we’re planting stuff like lavender, I’ve got like, maybe 140 magnolia trees, big blossoms,” Freeman told The Toronto Sun.

Regardless of how you feel about celebrities, they have an amazing platform to spread awareness of the vital role, which bees play in society and the danger humanity faces from the collapse of bee populations.
