Balch Springs, TX — A family is devastated and a community is in shock after a model student and athlete has been killed by a Balch Springs police officer. While police refuse to identify the boy, family and friends have identified him as 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. According to the family’s attorney, he was unarmed and had committed no crime when he was killed.

According to police, they were responding to a party at which underage drinking was allegedly taking place. There were reports of intoxicated teenagers moving along the 12300 block of Baron Drive around 11 p.m. Saturday night.

Police claim responding officers heard gunfire while looking for the alleged intoxicated teens. When they saw a car in which Edwards was a passenger, one officer opened fire as the vehicle backed up.

“There was an unknown altercation with the vehicle backing down the road towards the officers in an aggressive manner. An officer shot at the vehicle, striking a front seat passenger. The individual was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” according to a news release by the Balch Springs police.

No guns were found in the vehicle.

All too often police use excuse that a vehicle was presenting a threat and open fire. As we’ve extensively reported — the overwhelming majority of the time — this is untrue.

Also, according to the family’s attorney, Lee Merritt, the teens in the car were not the ones police were looking for and had not been drinking.

Merritt explained to the Dallas Morning News that Edwards and his friends were trying to escape from the gunfire when the officer killed him.

According to Merritt, the other teens in the car are not facing charges either — including the driver who allegedly backed his car up aggressively toward an officer. They were all innocent.

“They were simply leaving a party where they believed danger was, so I can’t wrap my mind around why an officer decided to shoot into the car,” said Merritt.

“An unarmed 15 y/o child died after being shot in the head by Balch Springs PD. A cop shot multiple rounds into a car filled with teens,” Merritt said on Facebook.

“Another family ripped apart by police brutality. There was absolutely no justification for this murder,” Merritt said on Twitter. “We demand justice!”

Police have refused to release any further information about the case.

“Great kid.  Awesome parents.  He was not a thug.  This shouldn’t happen to him,” said Chris Cano, whose son played football with Edwards.

A longtime family friend, Robbin McDonald, told KDFW-TV that Jordan “was a straight A student, I can tell you he was always smiling. I can tell you he was a very, very brilliant and humble and very sweet kid.”

His former football coach, Kim Hickman, told KXAS-TV, “I’m hurt devastated, I mean, I love that kid it hit home, when I heard it, it hit home, it’s sad.”

According to the Balch Spring Police department, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office will be investigating the shooting. However, the sheriff has yet to comment on the incident. But they have launched a criminal investigation and the Public Integrity Unit of the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office’s will also be investigating.

All officers in the Balch Spring Police department wear body cameras and all vehicles have dash cameras. However, no video has been released.

Merritt is now calling for the immediate release of the videos which have undoubtedly already been reviewed by the department.

As WFAA reports, Merritt said the Edwards family wants to see police body cam footage and wants better answers for how the incident unfolded.  He said one of Jordan Edwards’ brothers was also riding in the vehicle, and the driver was also 15-years-old.

They are not there to protect black people.
They were never there to protect black people.
America was made for white people.
Black people were only brought there to serve white people.

They killed a black boy, what will people do about it?
Pretty much the same thing they have always done when a black boy was shot or lynched, which is nothing at all.
They will kill more, and more after that.

      • IceTrey

Cops actually kill 3 times as many whites.

        • Ajax Smith

How many times more whites are there in America compared to blacks?
And what happens when we compare the statistics of unarmed people being shot?

          • IceTrey

I didn’t say anything about the rate.

          • Ajax Smith

            I couldn’t careless myself. A life is a life.
What matters is there are too many innocent people being killed.
            And one is too many.
Rules of engagement needs to change, and police who break the rules need to be prosecuted for murder, and manslaughter.

I love the way the Police Officer gives his speech with a black guy standing behind him.
It is the Police departments way of saying, “Hay we are not racist, I have a black guy standing behind me.”

Check every questionably racist speech ever given and look for “that guy”.
      He’s there.

More white people are killed by cops annually by a substantial margin but people like you and blm like to ignore this.

Another day, another unarmed black boy getting shot. People will complain about it a little bit, than forget all about it, until the next time.

Always, paranoid murderous SA, shooting at a car instead of walking out of the way.

I know they deliberately hire cops with lower IQs, but the continued recurrence of tragic stories like this, lead me to suspect that they are purposefully violent, & much of their assumed ‘stupidity’ is faked, & that they really intend to eventually kill & enslave the general populace,..(the probable REAL stupidity here, is likely well over their heads)…..

“He was not a thug.” His death wouldn’t have been OK with me if he had been!

  • The Cat’s Vagina

The fact that they haven’t released the video yet tells me all I need to know!

    • dani

The Dallas Police Department has taken over the investigation and ordered that the videos not yet be released. Before you think you “know” anything, you might check your facts.

      • The Cat’s Vagina

Facts don’t matter to the cops! When the shooting is justified, they’ll release video to the media before the fucking funeral. When it makes them look bad, the strategy is to sit on the footage for a few weeks/months until everyone’s attention and outrage have wondered elsewhere. That way, instead of forming an angry mob, society is like “oh yeah, I remember that story… that really sucked.”

As a taxpaying resident resident of the city of Irving in Dallas County, I respectfully recommend you sit the fuck down and stop acting like you “know” anything yourself!

        • dani

That’s sweet that you have such an opinion. Sorry that you are blind to reality and that this incident has been handled by the press and cops and everyone has stated how wrong it was. Balch Springs was ready to release the video but Dallas Police are conducting an investigation separately and ordered them not to release it. No one is defending the officer’s actions. No one is trying to mar the poor innocent child who was shot in front of his own brother. The only claims out there are that this was an outstanding kid who was murdered by a bad cop, even the police chief expressed that opinion. You are part of the problem when you attack a group for the actions of an individual. You are part of the problem when you perpetuate misinformation. You were probably on your couch in that Irving apartment cheering as police were being attacked here last summer.

          • The Cat’s Vagina

Time to seek your stimulation elsewhere, dearie. Go be someone else’s problem, like a good little girl… mkay?

  • Liz O’neill

another child murdered by a cop, they will investigate themselves and find the officer innocent, he was in fear of his life from a bunch of unarmed SOBER children, then he will be back on the streets, ready to murder another child

    • Ajax Smith

As long as police get to investigate themselves, they will always kill black people.

  • Mother Earth

Another murderous cop shooting anything that moves, To protect n serve, “maim n kill” should be added to their logo

  • P. Douglas

And now it turns out that the car was not backing toward the police but in fact driving away from them. Where are the ‘I feared for my life’ and ‘he moved assaultively’ excuses now?

In every profession, there are bad individuals…the coach who molests kids, the teacher who abuses power in underage relationships, the doctor who prescribes drugs without cause, a priest who fondles little boys, the accountant who embezzles, the politician who takes bribes. We as a society are not willing to condemn the entire profession because of the bad individuals. There is no doubt that there are bad cops, but we cannot continue to riot and protest all cops and all departments. The chief of Balch Springs came out and owned the horrific incident and said that his officer was wrong and has been fired and there will ultimately be criminal charges. I live here where this happened. The family is begging people not to protest and riot. They believe that police are good and good for communities but that bad cops should be exposed. One bad officer should not make an entire department fear for their safety. The Dallas PD, now handling the investigation, will ultimately charge Oliver with the murder. He will pay the price just like a criminal. It is horrible and completely unjustifiable what happened. People say that it is not always how you fall, but how you recover. The police are not defending this officer, they are all completely in agreement that he was wrong in his actions. The police departments here have battled our community for a long time. Nearly one year ago, four officers were killed in a sniper ambush. On Monday, a lone gunman had a neighborhood blocked off for hours after shooting a man and critically injuring a firefighter who was responding. We have had protests and marches galore in Dallas and most are never about the hatred of the police force but of the bad police that cause such damage.
