Don’t walk away from me I am an officer of the law!
** UPDATE (POSSIBLE HOAX):
Earlier this week, a number of international news organizations, including us here at The Free Thought Project, broke the story of a viral video, where two young teenagers recorded their encounter with an alleged NYPD cop.
In the video, the teens staged a series of fights while wearing different clothing, and the outcome of the video showed that the alleged officer profiled them while they were wearing Muslim attire.
Since the video was published, it has received criticism from a wide range of different people, from many different backgrounds. According to The Smoking Gun, representatives of the NYPD have reviewed the video and are claiming that it is a hoax.
The NYPD has been known to lie, but many experts in the police accountability movement have also questioned the authenticity of this video.
Adam Saleh and Sheikh Akbar, the creators of the video have not been available for comment since the release of the video, but if the accusations of fraud against them are true, then they have done a major disservice to the movement that they claim to be fighting for.
There are real-life scenes of police brutality and abuses of power everywhere, there is no need to create a hoax.
Young YouTube activists recently took to the streets of New York City with a hidden camera to prove how often racial profiling happens with the police in their neighborhoods.
In a video released earlier this week, Adam Saleh and Sheikh Akbar staged a fight in front of a police officer, the pair were both dressed as average African-American males. Surprisingly, the officer stood and watched the fight develop, and eventually decided not to intervene.
Moments later, the two walked down the same street in front of the same officer, however the second time they were both wearing traditional Muslim clothing. On the second pass by the officer, Saleh and Sheikh repeated their argument scenario, but the second time, while in the Muslim attire, the pair were much more tame in their fake altercation.
Without a moment of hesitation, the officer immediately begins to stop and question the two, and when they try to walk away, the officer initiates a stop and frisk, demanding that they stand against the wall. While the officer shakes down the pranksters for weapons, they point out that they were the same people as before, and that the officer had reacted differently due to their clothes.
During the stop and frisk, a passerby approached the scene and was told by the officer that he would be arrested for obstruction of justice if he did not leave.
Saleh and Sheikh were searched by the officer and immediately left the area.
Saleh and Sheikh made the following post along with the release of the video:
We were filming another video for our channel with our cultural clothing but we kept getting followed by Police. So, we decided to film this social experiment on racial profiling. Too many innocent people get stopped and frisked every day because of what they wear or their skin color. We’re against people stereotyping others because of what they wear or what skin color they are. Hope you all can spread the message and help bring an end to this.
