A U.S. Citizen is 58 Times More Likely to be Killed by a Police Officer than a Terrorist

58-times-more-likely-to-die-from-police-than-terrorist

Most people have seen the number floating around social media that suggests that citizens are 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than a terrorist, but new data revisions suggest this number was dramatically underestimated.

The lack of accurate official records being kept in the important category of individuals killed by police was met with numerous efforts by citizens. One example, in particular, is www.killedbypolice.net. This site is used to more accurately track the number of people killed by cops yearly.

Previously, estimates of citizens killed by police were based on the self-reported data supplied by police departments, compiled into a yearly FBI uniform crime report for “justifiable homicide” by officers.

This information drastically underrepresented the number of people being killed at hands of police officers thus giving an unclear perspective of what is actually transpiring on the streets of America.

New data, as reported by the Guardian, suggests that an average of 545 people killed by police went unaccounted for yearly on average in the FBI data.

The revised estimates put the annual number of people killed by cops at an average of 928 per year over the past eight years; a conservative estimate. This information contrasts with the 461 reported killed by police by the FBI for 2013, a difference of almost 450 killings or nearly 50 percent.

When looking at terrorism, the U.S. Department of State reports that only 16 non-military U.S. citizens were killed worldwide as a result of terrorism in 2013, the most recent year data there was available data.

What this means is that a U.S. citizen is actually 58 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist.

Let that sink in for a moment.

You are almost 60 times more likely to have a police officer kill you than to be killed by a terrorist.

While civil liberties are rolled back in the name of “keeping us safe from terror,” under the auspices of the PATRIOT Act and the NDAA, the true threat to American freedom lies not some imaginary foreign boogeyman but rather here on our own streets.

The blue mafia is a much more dangerous enemy to the life, liberty and freedom of every U.S. citizen than the Islamic State, Al-Qaeda and all other terror groups combined.

The genuine threat to America comes not from the outside but from within.

One purpose of the prison industrial complex is to have as much labor as possible done by incarcerated slaves. The ones who accepted the university debt prison option will be the ones who get to live in debt prison houses and apartments.

  • Stupid statistic. Compare apples to apples. That is like saying people in Syria are 90% more likely to be killed by a terrorist then a police officer.

Typical media reporting. Push that hate agenda!

    • Hate? 967 people have been killed by cops this year. That seems like hate to me. You are obviously angry but your comparisons make no sense and your accusations are unfounded. Have an argument against the statistics then feel free to present it, but simply complaining like an angry child does nothing to prove your point.

    • I am not angry and apologize if it came off that way. I do not disagree with the facts that police caused deaths have escalated. I was however pointing out that comparing terrorist to cops in what you are most likely to get killed by is a bad comparison. You do not need a statistic to show we are in a safe haven from terrorist acts compared to our European brothers. How ever over 100,000 Middle Eastern civilians have been tortured, raped and murdered by the people referred to as terrorist.

I say “hate” because you can find plenty of good stories of police officers. Where they sacrifice their lives or save someone or even as simple as mowing a pregnant woman’s yard. Like all mainstream media outlets do is only post/report on the things that make their cause seem better.

Last, I respect most of your post and follow you because I agree with your message, but that does not mean we will always agree.

    • Since we spend billions and billions on “safety” from terrorist and also on the police departments ability to provide “safety” across the U.S. here at home.
Comparing them does makes sence to analyze if money could be better (or also) spent on the “safety” of those who may have been criminally killed by the stewards of “safety”
I also believe that comparing the honest achievements of these stewards to any from of any argument as to the integrity of duties and actions of the enforcement of said stewards of “safety” (save the bar set to measure) is a tactic used by those who justify criminal actions of law enforcement in order to enforce the law. It deflects the entire point.
Ps But its good to see adults handle a dispute correctly

    • Makes sense to me

    • If you want to compare money is one thing, but to stretch to “what you are most like to get killed from”, in my opinion, a bad comparison.

We as people far to offend pick what statistics fit our individual views. 10,000+ people were killed and 290,000 people were injured due to drunk driving, but I do not see the media going after Budweiser or bars. Police brutality gets more ratings that is why you see it. 900+ people killed by cops, justified or unjustified, is small apples to what American funded terrorist are doing abroad. America’s drug problem is over 10,000 deaths per year, but no one media source is covering big pharm companies.

    • I think it’s a good comparison; deaths by cop are up, deaths by terrorists are extremely low, yet the expenditure on both is ridiculous..never mind police hiring standards.

    • The police dont create the criminal act that gets people killed. How many cops have been killed by the same type of citizens

    • Hard to tell because the media does not speak about cops that are killed.

    • Do you insane people really think cops go to work each day just to kill a person that day. You act as if cops do it for fun. He’ll if you really cared you would go to the streets and stop the gangs and criminal from killing

    • That’s a better area to focus on

    • Lol.. Why are you assuming I hate cops? I know a lot about the law enforcement due to personal experience and just so you do not assume some more, that experience is not on the criminal side.

If I could go to the streets to be judge and executioner, I would. Unfortunately we live in a society where we protect criminals and I would go to jail. I will do what I am already doing, watch society fall, hoard water and ammunition.

    • And how many people have killed police officers?

    • Paul Compton Some I believe do, especially when they shoot unarmed citizens..and walk away to do it again. We have people being shot for Jay-walking..or less.

    • Pj .. Over a ten year period 1446 (145 per year average) LEO’s died in the line of duty. (this would include car accidents etc.) A rather small number compared to the nearly 1000 killed by police in the per year average suggested.

    • The media attention faced on the law enforcement does bother me because their agenda (always) isn’t what it appears to be and I totally agree 1in 6 people die from riding atvs so I get your point and agree. Though this is America and we have laws here and all are held accountable. Allegedly
The term terroist is so vauge it is near pointless to compare but strikes good debate on a subject that is important.

    • Richard find me a statistic or quantify how many police officers have saved lives. Take that number and compare it to how many criminals have saved a life. I do believe that every instants of a cop shooting needs to be treated as a case, but the media has turned our nation into a police hating society and it is sad. The media fuels the race hatred and only divides us further as a nation.

When people stand divided they are easier to control.

    • Jeffrey Jacobs TheFreeThoughtProject has from time to time posted stories that show the good cops can do also. But just because a cop goes out, does their job and not attack or kill anyone that night, does not mean they should be applauded for not engaging in those activities.

    • Thanks Richard! I had a feeling this was a stupid argument. I’m really tired of people who hate the police. Those guys go to work work everyday and risk their lives to keep us safe. People who get shot by police more than likely asked for it. Police don’t go around shooting people because they’re having a bad day. I’m an ex Air Force cop. I never saw anywhere near the action civilian police do and it only took four years for me to realize I wasn’t going risk my life and leave my kids motherless for some crack head in the civilian world. But a lot of people have the calling for it and I respect them for it.

    • S. Erik Hermo I am sure it is nice and safe in Whales, but America is a country full of danger and a police officer here never “just goes out”. Every traffic stop could be your last breath, the last time you kissed your wife or kids. A police officer walks into piles of shit every time they put on their uniform. So you Sir are wrong, they should be applauded every time they survive a day, even a pat on the back for having no major instances.

    • Nobody legitimately thinks cops go to work every day hoping to get to kill someone. That doesn’t even have to be true for there to be a problem with police use of force. Stop conflating the act pointing out the flaws in the system as hatred of police. It’s not the same.

    • When acts of murders/assassinations are happening to police officers and their families it is a problem with hatred. When a good police officer gets shot in the head, execution style at a gas station just because he is a police officer, that is hatred.

    • As usual, Americans are the biggest fraidy cats. Everyone is out to get me, I need a gun to protect myself, black people are scary. A cops job isn’t that dangerous compared to other jobs, so stop patting yourself on the back. • The only ones who need fear police are those who resist arrest by trying to hurt or kill police. Overall, police are not bad, but there are a few. If you want to get a % of bad police, look at our society from where they are hired. Prejudice exist, that is a fact and always will be. Though police forces try to vet prejudice officers from their forces, some at bound to slip through the cracks being drawn from our society itself. As a law abiding citizen, I have never had a problem with any officer other than once I got one with an attitude that stopped me for a stop sign violation. But I respect and appreciate our Law Enforcement. They put their lives on the line for us every day. When confronted by an officer, be compliant and follow his directions. Only when you try to prove you are right at the time the charge or resist arrest is made is when trouble happens. All cases will eventually be cleared or come to court. That is the place to make your argument, no with the officer when he is simply trying to do his or her job.

    • It’s also not a police officers job to be judge and executioner. We just want the killing of innocent people to stop.

    • I realize that there have been a couple of bad shooting by bad cops, either too fat to give chase or had to make a snap decision what was in a persons hand, thinking it was a lethal weapon. But on the making snap decisions by cops, I went through the course they do, and believe me, you would not want me to be a cop. I got killed 3 times and shot 5 innocent people. Now I realize the problems they face every day. Supporting the good cops is important and seems to be being overlooked by BLM. They seem to think all cops are bad. Why/ If any of them were in trouble or a life threatening situation they would call a cop to come save them. I was so proud of the NYC police, standing there protecting BLM’s right to protest, while all the while being called names and cursed at by those they were protecting. Cops are a special breed of human beings, wanting to protect and serve. Unfortunately every traffic stop or attempt to peacefully arrest someone does not always go well in today’s world. BLM needs to find a way of getting their message out with implying all cops are terrorist. That is not true, and there are those of us who know this is not true. BLM seems the terrorist to us. With the destroying of there own communities, riots in the streets, picking criminals to defend, killing cops, and stirring up trouble, they seem to want something besides improvements in police departments. IF they push it far enough, the government will probably push for a world police force to come in. That will not work out to well for the same crowd trying to destroy civil law enforcement. Ir would be little better than a dictatorship by the UN over American citizens. And if you think the killing is bad now, if that happens, protesting will get you killed. Trials would be a thing of the past. They arrest you, you go to prison with no trial. There are 30 FEMA internment camps already in this country and 6 UN bases in preparation for a world police by UN to step in. If you want to know what this is all about, that is the true agenda of those behind BLM. And they are using the uninformed to get the job done. Think about it.

    • FEMA camps are a BLM agenda..lol, hilarious!

    • A couple of bad shootings? Are u for real u don’t get out much do u

    • Paul Eric McCarter Didn’t say BLM was responsible for FEMA camps, I said BLM was being used to accomplish the agenda to establish a world police force who would use them. BLM is being used, but the haven’t figured it out yet. Obama has already talked about a world police force at UN.

    • Frank Ingersoll I have seen the news reports from across the nation. There were a couple where police were absolutely at fault, but then there were those where the “victim” attacked the police, one young boy with a “look like real” gun refused to put it down and pointed it at police, and then there was one where the man was shot just running away that was unarmed (that one was really wrong). But under attack and fearing for his life, and officer can defend him or herself the same as you and I can. With the boy, they had no way to tell the gun was a toy. So far, I have only seen one shooting where a cop was guilty of murder, and that was when the man was clearly unarmed and running away from the cop. The one where the man was shot in his car by the campus cop that claim he was trying to tun over him was bogus. And the campus cop was privately employed and not a member of local law enforcement. I have kept up with just about every shooting and the Freddie Gray incident. It is still unclear if Gray injured himself in the back of that van so he could sue law enforcement, or whether the driver gave him a rough ride. But that investigation was doomed from the word go when the DA got it wrong stirring up the young people, promising justice when there might not be any clear justice to have. I realize people are mad, but going after all cops is not the way. Making heroes out of people like Micheal Brown is not right either. He beat the policeman and then was coming after him again, that was substantiated by witnesses (many of the black). The hands up don’t shoot narrative was false according to everyone that witnessed what happened. But people took the anger they had and ran with a false narrative that really hurt them with public opinion instead of helping the cause. Someone within BLM is making some bad choices as to how to present the things BLM wants to gain from the movement. Many, like myself, just see BLM being used by activist to destroy civil law enforcement to be replaced by a world police force of the UN. And, like me, I am not really sure what those with BLM think they want to gain themselves and what they actually want done?

  • Tell that to the victims of the WTC, Pentagon, or the Alfred P. Murrah building. Tell that to the dead kids at Columbine and Sandy Hook. If you weren’t so disgusting you’d still be pathetic.

    • Columbine was committed by US residents not the “terrorists”. You still believe the Sandy Hoax? Don’t expect me to believe whatever that was they staged for TV. Jet fuel cannot melt steel beams. Never forget building 7.

  • I have accidently driven through where 7 patrol cars and 2 canine teams had stopped a suspect in a black SUV. The suspect had both hands out the driver’s window, so I had about 10 guns trained on me as I drove thru, and not one police officer fired at me. Don’t horse around with the cops they have guns, da.
