Long Beach, California- 20-year-old Feras Morad was shot and killed by police on Wednesday. The shooting happened after a party at which Feras had allegedly been acting strange and had jumped through a window severely injuring himself.
Police shot the young man when he was approaching them, despite the fact that he was shirtless, injured and obviously unarmed. The victim was a student at Moorpark College where he had a 3.9 GPA and was also a nationally ranked debate competitor on the debate team.
According to witnesses and police, Morad had become erratic and got into a fight with another guest at a party. Many of his friends and other people at the party suspected that he was on drugs, and at one point, he even jumped through the window of the apartment. When he jumped through the window, someone called 911, and moments later police and firefighters arrived on the scene.
“He appeared to have a large cut on his body and was covered with blood,” police admitted.
According to NBC, “the officer believed Morad “was now a threat and going to assault him,” so the officer used “verbal commands, an electronic control device, an impact weapon, and physical force” on Morad, but was unsuccessful in restraining him.
However, it is important to remember that there are two sides to every story, and although the officer’s side is printed in every report, Morad’s side of the story can not be told.
“He wasn’t supposed to be shot, even if he did something, if he was under the influence, he should not have been shot, he could not harm anyone,” Morad’s father said.
The version of the story that the police department has given thus far is completely ridiculous. The police claim that they used every attempt to stop the boy without using lethal force, including a taser. They even claim that the boy told them “I am going to attack you!” which is a highly unlikely scenario.
“That’s not the right way to tell your family that your brother is gone. They told me they were preparing for a debate and decided to have some fun and it got out of hand,” Morad’s sister, Ghada said.
“I know my nephew since he was born, he was in my heart, and for him to be taken like that, it’s not fair,” Morad’s uncle, Mahmoud said.
A Facebook page called “Justice For Feras Morad” says he was “was unarmed and in desperate need of medical attention,” and uses the hashtag #Justice4Feras.
Morad was a brilliant young man with his whole life ahead of him, who may have unfortunately not been in the state of mind to immediately obey a police officer. Does this mean that he deserved to die?
