Police union representatives in San Jose have recently said that a minimum of 200 police officers will quit if the mayoral candidate of their choosing is not elected into office.

Police union representatives in San Jose have recently said that a minimum of 200 police officers will quit if the mayoral candidate of their choosing is not elected into office.

Police department employees are concerned that candidate Sam Liccardo will cut pay and pensions for officers, and continue a policy of police reform enacted by current Mayor Chuck Reed.

“The residents I talk to who hear these kinds of veiled threats, consider it political blackmail, they’re smarter than that and they’re not going to be bullied. They know it’s their job to elect the next mayor, not the job of a union boss,” Liccardo said.

Current Mayor Chuck Reed has been at odds with the police department for his entire term, which is likely a refreshing thing for many San Jose residents.

“The police union makes pretty bold statements all the time, because we’re in the middle of a political campaign, and they’re doing everything they can to undermine the department, and predicting bad things is just part of what they do,” Reed told reporters.

When asked about these statements, police union president Jim Unland stood by his words, saying that it could be even more than 200 officers who decide to quit.

Earlier this week, Unland said that “To think that my job as the POA president is to sell their failed policies, that’s just crazy, and now we’re issuing a new warning. If you continue eight more years of this, more officers are gonna leave. It’s just what’s gonna happen. It’s not a threat, it’s not an intimidation, it’s just a warning that this is the consequence to continuing these policies.”

Liccardo has said at various public appearances that he intends to raise police officer’s pay, but the police union seems set on getting their candidate into office.  It was reported by CBS that police sources recently contributed over $50,000 to the campaign of Liccardo’s opponent Dave Cortese.

Earlier this month, we reported that the entire police force in one city went on strike, and the residents didn’t want them back, because crime did not get any worse, and there was far less traffic due to the lack of transit police.

Could this happen in San Jose too?
