Maury City Police Chief Richard Stitts, of Tennessee was recently arrested and charged with assault, harassment and stalking the mother of his child.

When Stitts was initially booked at a Crockett County jail, the arresting officers and prison staff allowed Stitts to take his mugshot with a cigar hanging out of his mouth.

In the picture, Stits can also be seen holding up his inmate uniform, instead of wearing it as any other inmate would be forced to do.

The 66-year-old police chief reportedly threatened to kill the woman, who had a restraining order against him at the time.

When it was revealed that Stitts was able to behave so arrogantly during his arrest, officials at the police department were humiliated, and forced him to take a second mug \shot that could actually be used in his file.

"When I called down there, the picture appeared which happened to be the one that made a mockery of my department," Sheriff Troy Klyce said.

"Some of you have seen the results of bad judgment by a couple of my correctional officers, I make no excuses. I can tell you I was not in town at the time and I do not approve of this in the least. A proper booking photo has been taken and I will fully investigate the actions of my staff members. Rest assured, once our internal affairs investigation is complete — disciplinary action will be taken. This behavior is not consistent with the professional culture we have created within the Sheriff's Department. Thank you for your understanding and support,"Klyce wrote on the sheriff's department Facebook page.

When asked about the mugshot, Stitts told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that he had walked into the police department with the cigar in his mouth and just hadn't thought about taking it out. He also mentioned that he did not put the jumpsuit on because he was planning to post his $2,500 bond immediately.

"I don't want to make any comments about the picture. I just want everything to get back to normal," Stitts said.

Stitts and the two officers who oversaw his photo-shoot are all suspended without pay pending an internal affairs investigation.

Stitts is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 23 for the charges connected to the harassment of his child's mother.
