Wilmington, NC — In a time when tensions between police officers and the citizens they serve are at an all time high, peace and solutions should be at the forefront of the conversation. Sadly, however, as TFTP has reported over the last several weeks, instead of engaging citizens in reasonable discourse to find a solution, many police departments have circled the wagons and have prepped for war. Literally.

Cpl. Jessie Moore, and officers Kevin Piner and Brian Gilmore took to their official radio channels recently and quite literally called for a civil war to wipe black people off the map. On Wednesday, after their conversations about “slaughtering” black people in a race war came to light, the officers were all fired.

The officers were fired for violating standards of conduct, criticism and use of inappropriate jokes and slurs. The comments were hardly jokes, however.

In an attempt at transparency, Wilmington City Manager Sterling Cheatham cleared Police Chief Donny Williams to release the details of these extremely hateful and racist comments.

“When I first learned of these conversations, I was shocked, saddened and disgusted,” Williams said at a news conference on Wednesday. “There is no place for this behavior in our agency or our city and it will not be tolerated.”

As the Charlotte Observer reports:

According to documents released by the police department, a sergeant was conducting a video audit as part of a monthly inspection and was reviewing footage from Piner’s car that had been classified as “accidental activation.” After the sergeant listened to the conversation and determined comments made by Piner and Moore were “extremely racist,” she contacted the department administrator for the camera system.

At the 46-minute mark of the video, Piner and Gilmore began talking from their respective cars, at which time Piner criticized the department, saying its only concern was “kneeling down with the black folks.” About 30 minutes later, Piner received a phone call from Moore, according to the investigation, a segment in which Moore referred to a Black female as a “negro.” He also referred to the woman by using a racial slur. He repeated the use of the slur in describing a Black magistrate, and Moore used a gay slur to describe the magistrate as well.

According to the department, after tossing around racial epithets over official police channels, Piner upped the ante and called for a full on slaughter. He said he was going to buy a new AR before “we are just going to go out and start slaughtering them (expletive)! I can’t wait. God, I can’t wait.”

These comments were apparently too much for Moore — who was recorded only moments earlier hurling racial slurs — and he said he wouldn’t go along with that. When met with Moore’s rejection, Piner doubled down, saying that he thinks a civil war is necessary to “wipe them off the f**king map. That’ll put them back about four or five generations.”

These comments were also too much for Moore who called Piner “crazy,” before the recording ended.

After the recordings were heard by others in the department, an investigation was launched and the officers admitted to making the comments. Laughably, Piner denied being “racist” despite literally calling for the eradication of black people. The others denied being racist as well.

They went to blame their anger and hatred toward blacks on the stress they endured after the unrest during the George Floyd protests. While it was certainly stressful for many police departments, other departments who chose to support their citizens during the protests had much less stressful interactions and no violence at all.

According to the Observer, after they were fired, the case was turned over to the District Attorney’s office to find out if they committed any crimes. At the very least, every arrest of a black person these officers made should now be called into question.

What will actually happen, however, is that these fired officers will quietly relocate to another town and get hired on at their departments while continuing to put out their hate.

It is important to point out that not all police officers think like this. Most cops are not racist. However, despite many officers not being racist at all, systemically, they all uphold a paradigm of racial disparity — even minority officers — by enforcing policies like the drug war, which hits black communities far harder than their white counter parts. This is a reality that even police themselves admit.
