Washington, D.C. — Last year, a Metro Transit police officer from the Washington D.C. area was arrested and charged with attempting to provide material support to the Daesh. This week, the terrorist sympathizer and outspoken white supremacist was convicted of helping the Islamic State militant group, ISIS, and obstructing justice.
Officer Nicholas Young has now become the first law enforcement officer in the United States to ever be convicted of terrorism. According to the indictment filed in federal court last year, Young tried to help Daesh (ISIS, ISIL, the so-called Islamic State) operatives find methods to communicate covertly, and previously traveled to Libya to assist in deposing leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Young allegedly purchased “stored value” gift cards for a mobile messaging service and other ‘technology-related’ items to send to Daesh operatives to assist them in evading detection by authorities.
However, as ABC News reports:
“Instead of allegedly engaging with true ISIS associates … Young was actually in touch with FBI informants and agents from the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in Washington, which has been conducting a lengthy undercover investigation into the office, officials say.”
Along with attempted material support for terrorism, the jury at the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia found Young guilty of obstruction of justice. Young attempted to deceive FBI investigators about what he thought was the informant’s destination in the Middle East and tried to cover for him by sending a text message to the man’s cell phone to make it appear he was on vacation in Turkey, rather than fighting for ISIS as Young believed, according to the Department of Justice.
As Newsweek reports, identified only as Mohamed, Young claimed he thought the FBI’s informant was traveling to Syria to fight President Bashar al-Assad’s brutal regime and sent $245 in Google Play gift card codes at his request. The cards were to be used by ISIS fighters to download encrypted messaging applications to send texts to new recruits.
Young is a Muslim convert who used to dress up as a Nazi officer in reenactments and had the logo of an SS unit tattooed on his arm, according to court filings.
If you are wondering what a Nazi would be doing aiding ISIS, you needn’t look any further than antisemitism.
“It’s a unique case; it’s a unique defendant,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Gordon Kromberg said in court last month, according to The Washington Post. “The defendant was an adherent of both . . . The common enemy is hatred of the Jews.”
The conviction came despite Young’s lawyer attempting to paint his client as a simple, strange, and harmless man with a twisted sense of humor who was entrapped by the FBI.
While it is entirely plausible that the FBI could’ve ensnared Young in one of their many schemes—as they have done hundreds of times—Young’s case was different as he was associating with known terrorists.
The investigation into Young began after an acquaintance of his, Zachary Chesser, was arrested and pled guilty to providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
The Justice Department alleges Young met with both an undercover officer and Amine El Khalifi, who was previously arrested for a plot to blow up the U.S. Capitol building in 2012.
Young, a resident of Fairfax, Virginia, worked for the Metro Transit Police Department for 12 years prior to last year’s arrest. The justice department did not mention whether or not Young’s occupation as a cop had anything to do with his illegal activities.
The convicted terrorist and former police officer is scheduled to be sentenced in February 2018. He is facing up to 60 years in prison.
