In recent weeks, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has come under criticism for a massive environmental disaster that they caused in Colorado by drilling through an abandoned mine and spilling millions of gallons of toxins into a pristine river, connected to major US waterways.
This situation came as a surprise to many people, who mistakenly believed that the EPA was actually protecting the environment instead of destroying it. However, this is not the first time that the EPA has been involved in such a scandal, and in fact, just months before this incident, there was another spill in Georgia that the agency was responsible for.
According to Watchdog.com, before the Colorado disaster hit the news, the EPA was able to sweep their blunder in Georgia under the rug. In Georgia, the agency decided to tamper with an abandoned and toxic cotton mill built in the early 19th century and struck a water main in the process, sending untold gallons of toxic waste into a nearby creek where it was able to move into other waterways.
The water that flowed downstream included extremely high levels of mercury, lead, arsenic and chromium. The toxins eventually made their way to Lake Oconee and then to the Oconee River, areas that are filled with endangered and protected species.
Despite the incident taking place 5 months ago, their blunder continues to pollute waterways. Storms continue to hit the site sending dangerous levels of pollutants into runoff water every time it rains.
As we reported last week, the EPA was warned by a geologist that their plan to tamper with the mineshafts in Colorado would end up disastrous, and would likely devastate the local ecosystem. The EPA ignored the warning and allowed the disaster to happen. As an isolated incident, this may just pass as a coincidence or an oversight, however, in the case that occurred in Georgia just a few months ago, they were also warned relentlessly.
Microbiologist and former EPA worker Dave Lewis had been warning about the site for years. In a 2014 plea to shut down an EPA project at the site, Lewis wrote “Clearly, the site is a major hazardous chemical waste dump, which contains many of the most dangerous chemical pollutants regulated by the EPA.”
A study of both of these incidents show that the EPA has grossly violated their own standards in the actions that they conduct, and can obviously not be trusted to enforce environmental regulations and laws, nor participate in any cleanup efforts. They are careless due to the fact that they cannot be held accountable for their actions, and it would make far more sense to put cleanup efforts in the hands of independent groups that genuinely care about the environment and can be held accountable for their actions.
