“The pattern of activity alleged in the obstruction of justice case shows how some members of the Sheriff’s Department considered themselves to be above the law.”The Free Thought Project John Vibes June 2, 2014
Recently a disturbing story about prison conditions has surfaced in L.A. County’s Twin Towers Correctional Facilities, in California. According to the LA Times, eighteen Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials were indicted in five separate criminal cases, ranging from conspiracy and obstruction of justice to improperly arresting and searching innocent jail visitors.
The police department employees are being accused of brutal and extreme mistreatment of inmates within the Twin Towers Correctional Facilities.
“Our investigation also found that these incidents did not take place in a vacuum — in fact, they demonstrated behavior that had become institutionalized,” U.S. attorney Andre Birotte Jr., said in a statement.
“The pattern of activity alleged in the obstruction of justice case shows how some members of the Sheriff’s Department considered themselves to be above the law. Instead of cooperating with the federal investigation to ensure that corrupt law enforcement officers would be brought to justice, the defendants in this case are accused of taking affirmative steps designed to ensure that light would not shine on illegal conduct that violated basic constitutional rights.” He added.
According to witness testimony, police and correctional officers in this department are guilty of indiscriminately beating not just the inmates, but even innocent family members who came to visit them. The guards are also accused of setting up sadistic games with the inmates, where they would be forced to fight as gladiators for the guard’s enjoyment.
Of the many police brutality stories that are covered in the alternative media, some of the worst are those cases that occur inside of prisons, at the hands of prison guards. Prisons are said to be places of rehabilitation, when in reality they are places of torture and exploitation. Prisons are basically places where a bunch of good, disobedient people are taken to be preyed upon by people who are actually criminals, whether that be the murderers that they are housed with, or the torturers who hold them captive.
