Last November, on the same day that Chicago police officer Jason van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder, the city released shocking dashcam video which shows the bloodthirsty cop ruthlessly gun down 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.
The police union claimed that McDonald lunged at the officers with a knife, but the video clearly demonstrates that was a lie.
In spite of the murder charges, the Chicago police union just hired him — a kick in the teeth to the McDonald family and the rest of Chicago as well.
According to ABC News, since being charged with murder, Van Dyke has been suspended without pay.
In the shocking video, released last year, a patrol car races toward the location where alleged car break-ins were occurring. A police SUV can be seen speeding to get in front of McDonald, who was walking down the street. Van Dyke and his partner exit the vehicle and almost immediately van Dyke begins firing. McDonald made no move toward the cops.
Van Dyke shot the teen 16 times, with nine bullets striking him in the back. He kept firing even after McDonald fell to the ground, twitching as he took his last breaths. Van Dyke started reloading his pistol until another officer told him to hold his fire.
Van Dyke was on scene for no more than 30 seconds, and opened fire on McDonald only six seconds after exiting his patrol car. The teen posed no threat to the cops, and was walking away from van Dyke when he was gunned down.
This murder is a matter of fact as the video clearly illustrates. However, the thin blue line has decided to ignore this recorded crime and hire the murderer. Van Dyke is now gainfully employed at the police union carrying out the day to day custodial work.
“He might be on the roof, he might be in the office, he does anything we need,” union president Dean Angelo Sr. told the Sun-Times.
Angelo went on to note that they hire plenty of criminal cops on unpaid suspensions. “We’ve probably had 100 people in no-pay status who we got jobs or hired at the hall. This is nothing new,” he said.
Of course, all parties are innocent until proven guilty, but this is not some flagrant charge — Van Dyke killed a kid by shooting him in the back as he walked away — on video.
Rightfully so, members of the community are outraged.
“Not only is it insulting and outrageous, but it is a slap in the face. It is the reason we have this continued breakdown between law enforcement and community,” the Rev. Michael L. Pfleger, a pastor at St. Sabina church and a community activist who has met with the family of Laquan McDonald, told ABC News today.
“This is much bigger than Laquan McDonald. This is an insult to the city of Chicago. It is an insult to him and his family, and it is an insult, I think, to police officers.”
As the citizens of Chicago try to bridge the divide between cops and the community, this decision by the police union lets them know where cops stand — and it’s clearly not with the community.
As young men with felony marijuana possession charges struggle to get jobs because of their police records, the Chicago police union has set the precedent. You can kill a kid on video and we’ll gladly pay you to come work for us.
