Cincinnati, OH — A 21-year-old man and a 48-year-old police officer are dead following an apparent attempt at suicide by cop.
Friday morning, Trepierre Hummons left a cryptic goodbye message on his facebook page.
He then picked up the phone and called 9-1-1. During his 9-1-1 call, Hummons would pretend to be a bystander calling in a report about a man acting aggressively with a gun.
“He’s walking around getting belligerent with a gun,” Hummons told the operator. Then he gave a description of himself in a shaky voice. “Very early 20s … about like 5 feet 6 inches … he’s a little thick fellow.”
Hummons dialed 9-1-1 again to make sure police were on their way. They assured him that an officer was on the way. That officer was Officer Sonny Kim, 48.
Upon arriving, Kim radioed in that he was on the scene.
“Copy, I’m in the area,” Kim said before bursting into shouts: “Shots fired! Shots fired!” He was ambushed by Hummons.
Despite wearing his bulletproof vest, Kim was struck multiple times. A struggle then ensued as Hummons jumped on top of the wounded Kim and tried to get his gun.
According to WISN,
“The suspect then returned to Police Officer Kim, who was lying wounded on the street and began to fight with him in an effort to take the officer’s firearm,” Police Chief Jeffery Blackwell said.
Kim struggled as he bled, but lost. When a third officer, Tom Sandmann, arrived, Hummons used Kim’s gun to fire at him. But Sandmann returned fire and wounded Hummons.
Both Hummons and Kim later succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
Hummons had sent out multiple texts to people claiming he wanted to commit suicide by cop, according to police.
Kim became the first Cincinnati officer killed in the line of duty since 2000, and Hummons, the 29th civilian killed by an officer since then.
It is clear that Hummons was not acting in self-defense which makes his attack on Kim, cold-blooded murder. Attacking those who’ve not directly posed a threat to you, is not only murder, but it’s cowardly too.
This violence by Hummons will only serve to instigate more violence as it will stoke even further divide, contempt and hate.
Kim had a wife and three children and just like the innocent people whose lives are taken by brutal agents of the state, he did not deserve to die.
