“I called 911 and told them that my handicapped son was out in his pj’s, could you bring him home or take him to a psychiatric ward to get an evaluation?”

Westland, MI — A 27-year-old mentally ill man has been killed after police responded to his mother’s 9-1-1 call for help.

The shooting happened Saturday night around 10 pm.

Troy Hart, 27, suffered from Kallmann syndrome, a genetic disorder where the primary symptom is a failure to start puberty and is sometimes accompanied with other dysfunctions such as neurodevelopmental disorders.

Troy’s mother, Cheryl Hart, says Troy was like an 8-year-old boy trapped in an adult’s body.

“With his impairment, he did not have a filter so he would just blurt things out, inappropriate things,” Hart says.

Hart’s family says he grabbed a hunting knife and stormed out of the door wearing only his pajamas.

That’s when Cheryl Hart says she dialed 9-1-1, “I called 911 and told them that my handicapped son was out in his pj’s, could you bring him home or take him to a psychiatric ward to get an evaluation?”

Police said they were responding to a home after a report of an armed man threatening to kill people.

According to FOX 2,

Witnesses say they saw Troy and his older brother Derek arguing at the corner of Clare and Grand Traverse.

Anthony Like, a witness, claims “when they [police] saw the knife, they told him to put it down but they continued to move forward even though they saw the knife. That’s what led to them shooting him, when he put it up.”

Police said the man was alive when he taken to Oakwood Hospital, but later died from his injuries.

Derrick, Hart’s brother who was standing next to him when he was killed, said it was like a living hell watching the police gun down his Troy.

Hart did not immediately die from his injuries, he was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

Police officers in the US frequently show their incompetence and lack of training when dealing with the mentally ill. Time and time again, mentally ill people are gunned down after the situation is quickly escalated by police.

Some of these people are not armed, while others, like Troy Hart, have only a knife. Instead of deploying less than lethal methods, like a taser or rubber bullets, police resort to deadly force, more times than not.

Here’s how police in the UK deal with a mentally ill man armed with a huge knife, amazingly enough, no one is killed.
