“How in the world can anyone say that this program has one lick of oversight?”
The domestic acquisition of MRAPs, Armored Personnel Carriers, Grenade Launchers, and Sniper Rifles, have finally gathered the attention of law makers in DC.
The realization of a standing army in the supposed “Land of the Free” has since become mainstream, after last month’s
show of military force police presence in Ferguson, MO.
A Senate hearing took place Tuesday to discuss the unaccountable and irresponsible billions in military gear given to local police departments throughout the country under the DoD’s 1033 program.
According to USA Today, lawmakers and witness suggested that programs have run amok, haphazardly doling out military equipment that has transformed some local police into paramilitary forces.
Spearheaded by Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo, and other members of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, officials had a brief moment of honesty when they testified that they had no way to track any “military-grade” equipment given to local departments.
“How in the world can anyone say that this program has one lick of oversight?” said McCaskill.
McCaskill highlighted the ridiculousness of military gear being passed out like lollipops by pointing out a Sheriff’s office in Oklahoma with only one full-time sworn officer, who has received TWO MRAPS!
McCaskill is not alone in her scorn of the militarized police state rising up in America.
U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said the militarization of police “has gotten out of control. … I can’t imagine any use for a bayonet in an urban setting.”
U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., said he had “some real heartburn” over the 1033 program, saying the federal government shouldn’t have a role in local and state police forces. “We’re on dangerous ground of undermining the basic principles that built the country,” he said. He wanted to know how the Defense Department decided an MRAP is appropriate for local police forces.
Nothing says it’s time for a national conversation more than politicians becoming worried about the rise of the Police State USA. While the Free Thought Project has long been a proponent for accountability amongst those who claim to enforce the law, it is encouraging to see this dialogue take place within the belly of the beast.
