Boulder, CO — Last year, American cops killed 1,183 people. Many of these people were unarmed, innocent, and some of them were even children. Most of the police officers involved in these killings will never be held accountable due to a system that perpetuates this behavior. A disturbing video shared with the Free Thought Project this week shows just how ridiculous police interactions in the ostensible land of the free have become as eight cops surrounded a black man and nearly shot him—for picking up trash in his own front yard.

The video was uploaded to Facebook over the weekend by Vanardo Merchant who identified the man picking up trash as his roommate, Zayd. Zayd had committed no crime, had harmed no one, and was providing a community service by removing trash from the neighborhood.

Despite being entirely innocent and aiding in the beautification of his neighborhood, Zayd was approached by a police officer because a black man picking up trash on his own property looked suspicious to him.

Merchant posted the video with the following description, expressing his disdain for the police state America is becoming.

Zayd is picking up garage (sic) outside of our home and 8 police officers pull up on him with guns threading to shot him telling him to put down the “weapon” {a bucket & garbage claps}

This freaks me out! Goodbye America 👋🏾 ~ I had fun while it lasted

Started filming much later from when the interaction happened

As the video shows, the officer approaches Zayd, telling him to “put the object down,” while the Zayd replies “don’t f*cking tell me what to do,” and says, “I have a right to be doing this.”

As Merchant noted in the video, the officer had his hand on his gun and was likely ready to shoot Zayd for doing nothing other than picking up trash.

“I live here,” Zayd can be heard saying in the video. “I am picking up garbage from my f*cking porch.”

According to police, they approached Zayd because he was sitting behind a private property sign and they wanted to make sure he lived there.

Police noted that Zayd told them that he lived and worked in the building and also provided the officer with his school identification card—although he had no legal requirement to do so.

Identifying himself and complying with the officer’s ridiculous investigation into an innocent black man in his own front yard was not enough for this cop, however. Instead of realizing that he was harassing an innocent man for picking up trash, the officer escalated the situation.

As the Daily Camera reports:

The officer then made a request over the radio for additional assistance to respond, saying the man was uncooperative and unwilling to put down a blunt object. Several other officers, including a supervisor, responded.

Police found the object the man was holding is a device used to pick up trash, and officers left the area.

In total, eight police officers surrounded this innocent man for doing nothing other than picking up trash in his own yard. According to Merchant, some of the officers even drew their weapons.

While some may claim that Zayd and Merchant should have been more polite with the officers, consider the fact that Zayd could’ve been gunned down in his front yard by these men for committing no crime. They had every right to be angry.

After the video was published on Facebook, the police were forced to respond. They claim that they have since launched an internal investigation which could take up to 90 days to complete.

Below is this most infuriating video that shows what picking up trash while black looks like.
