Baltimore, MD — Baltimore riot police chose to use an alternative means of “crowd control” during Monday’s protests/riots. The resultant fury was probably not expected.
Instead of tear gas or LRADs, BPD threw rocks at angry protesters.
AP photographer, Patrick Semansky caught the police action in a stunning photo.
News chopper video caught the resultant mayhem after this police engagement.
The short video below does not catch what happened prior to this officer throwing a rock resulting in the onslaught from the rioters. However, one can certainly conclude that the throwing of rocks is not in the standard operating procedure for officers.
Neither of the two groups should have engaged in such violence as the expected outcome of violence is most always more violence.
At least 15 officers were injured during Monday’s riots. There are also several reports of protesters and non-protesting civilians being injured as well, although that number is unknown.
During the riots, logic prevailed among many of the protesters and they not only refused to engage in the destruction of property, but they attempted to stop it.
Monday, the Free Thought Project reported on the Bloods, Crips, BGF and other gangs calling a truce to bring peace back into their community. They reached out to their neighbors to encourage them not to engage in violence and looting.
Baltimore residents have every right to be angered and in the streets as they just watched police allegedly murder a young man during an arrest for apparently no reason. Watching your friends and family being killed around you by police is a plight only understood by those who live it. The rage and anger derived from such mistreatment is bound to manifest into some sort of retaliation.
That being said, destroying private property and attacking people will only serve to substantiate this ridiculous police state being built up around us.
Unfortunately, some of the healthy concern that was building and the questioning of the militarization of police around the country was just turned into support for the police state last night.
But in spite of temporary victories, violence never brings permanent peace. It solves no social problem: it merely creates new and more complicated ones. Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.
